re: Covid 19 and Rangers of the West

0

Kinnies, we all come to Middle Earth for a respite from our everyday cares.  I love that about our kin.

However, Covid 19 (sometimes just referred to as "the coronavirus") necessitates a little intrusion from the real world.

The important thing to keep in mind is that no matter what we do, a lot of people will get sick-that's the nature of a pandemic.  Key will be keeping the spread from overwhelming our capacity to care for those who get sick.  That's what people mean when they talk about "flattening the curve".

There is a lot we cannot control about what is going on.  With no vaccine, prevention is pretty much down to some pretty old school interventions, but there are a few variations that are particularly relevant to modern life.

These suggestions are largely drawn from the Centers for Disease Control page at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prepare/prevention.html.   If you are not in the US, you may have location specific available .  Same thing if you are in a "hot spot"  for a virus outbreak, listen to your local health authorities and news sources for guidance that may be specifically relevant for your area.

Personal hygiene:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

Social Distance:

This is a new and a little confusing phrase.  But basically, it means using physical space as a barrier to exposure.  Viruses do not have pole vaults. :)  In most cases it doesn't mean using a mask, unless you are caring for someone at risk or already ill who cannot wear a mask.

If you have a cough or illness-no matter the source:

  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow.
  • Throw used tissues in the trash.
  • Immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, clean your hands with a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Cleaning Shared Equipment:

  • Clean AND disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.
  • If surfaces are dirty, clean them: Use detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection.

Yes, this includes the keyboard you're on right now.  Your cellphone.  Even your headphone microphone if it is shared.  While it's hard to find specific information on how to clean them, it appears the general consensus is that using an alcohol wipe is probably the best bet.

I hope this all stays a theoretical problem for all our Rangers-but better safe than sorry.

Now, let's break out the pie!
